Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he enjoyed playing various card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really competitive in these card games while playing his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little bit and moved to New York City to participate in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were tough as he played many hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by being an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more rest and focus attention more on the game.
The real advancement in his game happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would regularly challenge each other. Howard had access into several of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his cunning thinking skills. He applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit holdem.
Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a superb student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the greatest female players the poker world today. Howard Lederer moved to Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
