Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he loved playing various card games when he was young. He found himself getting very competitive in these card games while playing his father. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little while and relocated to New York to compete in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were difficult as he played extensive hours and don’t win most times. He earned some additional money by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he could improve his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more rest and focus attention even more on poker.
The real improvement in his skills happened when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would often play against one another. He was able to access a few of the foremost minds in chess. With their assistance, he would tweak his strategic thinking abilities. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of No-Limit hold’em.
Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. He told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. She is one of the greatest female players the poker arena today. Howard Lederer relocated to Sin City in 1993 and participated in money games for the next 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
