Phil Ivey has been branded as the greatest poker contender in the world by most of the top-ranked professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before his first birthday. His grandfather taught Phil one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup anything he could about the game. Phil routinely told his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not let the negative feedback from others kill his dream of becoming one of the strongest poker competitors on the planet.
Phil began competing seriously after getting a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his techniques at the casinos in Atlantic City. The initial number of years for Phil were a teaching period and coming away with a win was not a normal thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he achieved 2 final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the final table he destroyed a number of the better known pros which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his success to dedication and an immeasurable passion for poker. Phil states that he is learning every day and is very humble about his success. Phil admits to making blunders every single game of poker and always strives to get better.
Even though Phil has come first in some big tournaments, he likes destroying money games on a normal basis.
